A Beautiful Perspective on Bozeman

Our vacation rental called IdylWest is a “SHOTGUN MODERN HOUSE” built in 2006 as an IN-TOWN RETREAT BY FAMOUS BOOK AUTHOR, screen writer and outdoor enthusiast Thomas McGuane whose many works include the film Missouri Breaks starring Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando.

Designed as a hip and modern abode by award-winning architectural firm Thinktank AIA, it has many high-end features. Upon completion, the house was given a HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD for blending in so nicely with it’s downtown historic neighborhood and was FEATURED IN “AT HOME MAGAZINE” for its innovative design and outdoor space:

“The main floor features an open living and dining room with dark poured concrete floors which include radiant heat and and crisp white walls. A combination of metal, wood and earth-tones create a modern yet characteristically Montana feel. Tucked at the back of the house the kitchen continues the wood and metal theme found throughout the house. A loft-style floor plan allows for the maximum amount of light on the main floor as well as the master bedroom upstairs. Cork flooring on the second floor appeal to both the rustic and modern sensibility. A walk out upper deck that opens off the master bedroom is a sheltered place to take in the view of the Bridger Mountains. …The master bathroom has something for everybody with both a classic clawfoot tub and a modern, pale green tiled shower. Surprisingly, since from the outside it appears to be almost completely underground, the walk-out basement is almost as light as the upper floors, Outside, THE SMELL OF CEDER AND FLOWERS DRIFTS ON THE BREEZE. The garden is a combination of young trees and hearty native plants and flowers, Exchanging grass for small wood chips and stone walkways makes the yard a beautiful and accessible oasis.”

Idylwest is now managed as a VRBO by Bozeman Cottage Vacation Rentals, A UNIQUE AND LOCAL BUSINESS which was one of the first in town to offer these types of lodgings. And so, you deal with a seasoned business, yet one that provides a local and personal experience. Our manager, Paul and his staff of colorful locals are available to help you have the very best stay. We have hosted famous jazz singers, fishermen, ice climbers, skiers, scientists, summer residents and those who want to experience a vibrant town, the natural wonders of Yellowstone, Bridger Bowl a local SKI MOUNTAIN JUST 25 MINUTES AWAY and more.

And, for your experiences, we have put together a personalized “INSIDERS GUIDE” to easily find the best places that locals know and you might not otherwise find. Our DOWNTOWN LOCATION IS PERFECT because it is in a quiet tree lined street in the historic district yet within EASY WALKING DISTANCE (a few blocks!) to a food coop for groceries, a food and salad bar with different cuisine every day; elegant and casual dining, trendy boutiques, art walks, bluegrass music, coffeehouses, local ice cream, dancing in tea shops, yoga, library, theatre, wine and cheese, breweries, outdoor fireplaces, farmers markets, cultural arts center, art galleries, theatre, local rivers, and the many Bozeman festivals held year round in and around main street. Yes all of these and THE OUTDOORS!

Go green and rent a bike from a sister organization, Bozeman Bike Rentals which uses an electric bike and trailer to deliver and pick up bikes. Bike to a nearby trail called called “Main Street to the Mountains” and BIKE PATH-LINED STREETS THAT WIND THROUGH THE HISTORIC DISTRICT to breakfast, lunch or dinner. Visit nearby Montana State University for Shakespeare in the Park or the Museum of the Rockies. Begin a hike or bike a block or so away through a forest. In the evening, walk to the farmers market for provisions or dinner by a river. Nearby Peet’s Hill overlooks town and here you will find dogs, happy people and one of the most beautiful sunsets you have ever seen.

Idylwest is owned by former New Yorker’s Richard and Mary Ann Martell (also 20 year residents). We also own the HISTORIC DOWNTOWN LOFT (VRBO Listing #362767) which accommodates 2 or so people a block away.

Reviews/Feedback

This was the perfect 2-br. house to stay in Bozeman for a week Spacious bedrooms each with its own bath on separate floors, main floor with ample room for home cooked dinners and lounging in front of tv, well lit with natural light, and walking distance to Main St and MSU. Everything you need in the kitchen to cook as well. Radiant heated floor was really nice in February and enabled ski gear to dry over night plus a full-size washer and dryer. Come with your Netflix and/or Amazon prime log in and password info for tv as there is no cable but local networks do come in with antenna (though not all the time). Overall, would recommend for two couples or small families from 3-4 people (king in master and a queen and twin in second room).

We loved our stay at Idylwest! The house is gorgeous and spacious. The decor is modern, yet inviting. We were very comfortable and the house had everything we needed. They thought of everything. We were sad to leave because it definitely felt like a home away from home! Sincerely, Luci H.

Mary Ann is simply the BEST host out there We have stayed at many Vrbos in the past and she has just set the new (very high bar) for hospitality. She was very attentive to the unique needs of our family and went out of her way to check in on us and make sure we had everything we needed and be available for any questions. The property is beautiful- on a shady quiet neighborhood street with easy walking access to downtown and nearby parks. Beautifully maintained, unique modern architectural design and a great place to host an outdoor BBQ on the patio. We loved our stay. Thank you!

IdyleWest Guest House Review Our family enjoyed a marvelous nine day stay at Idylwest. This vacation home was meticulously maintained and ready for our family to enjoy. It is located just a few blocks from the active Bozeman Main Street and of course a short drive to the fabulous Southwest Montana vacation spots. Idylwest comes prepared with everything a family could possibly need, including kitchen supplies, and it felt like home within minutes of us moving in. It is easy to get spoiled living at Idylwest and our family will have a hard time ever enjoying an overnight stay in a typical hotel again when we travel. We are looking forward to our return to Idylwest next summer.

Amazing property in perfect location Idylwest is remarkable property – the architectural details and beautiful layout, and so comfortable. The back porch was perfect for brunch bought at the farmer’s market. You have easy walking access to all of the parks, bike trails and Main Street. The layout (master bedroom upstairs w/ balcony, bedroom downstairs) was perfect for our family. Even the neighbors on the street are friendly. We have stayed here 2 different times & have fond memories. One definition of “Idyl” = “an extremely happy, peaceful, or picturesque episode or scene, especially in rustic life”. We think it fits.

Former home owners in Big Sky, MT We loved our month at IdylWest. The house is well-appointed, extremely comfortable, and perfect for entertaining a few friends. The patio was a great place for visiting and just enjoying the sunshine or reading. The location could not be better – a short walk to town and very close to the park and farmer’s market there every week. We do a lot of fly fishing and IdylWest gave us proximity to several rivers within an hour’s drive. We would definitely recommend this property to friends. In fact, we are considering going back ourselves.

Bozeman Delight!! What a terrific opportunity to stay at Idyl West Guest House! Not a detail has been missed! Everything from the “green” renovation, relaxing patio and garden, upscale amenities to the extremely comfortable beds and surroundings! Our golden, Bentley, was in heaven with all the opportunities to walk in the neighborhood as well as hanging out on the patio! We only wish we would have been able to stay longer to enjoy more of Bozeman and all that it has to offer! Thanks Marissa for a wonderful stay! We look forward to coming back soon!

Fantastic House and Great Location Bozeman Cottage was a welcome oasis for us as my son settled into his first year at MSU. It is beautifully designed, inside and out, maximizing its deceptively tiny footprint. The house is homey yet modern and was outfitted with thoughtful touches for anything you want to see and do around Bozeman (a pair of fishing waders in the closet are just asking to be used!). The location is fantastic, too…a casual walk to Main Street for a morning bagel and tea (through a nice neighborhood) and close proximity to campus made this the perfect spot. We really enjoyed our stay and will think of Bozeman Cottage first, for future visits.

Very convenient location- comfortable and spacious My husband and I stayed here for the first time recently and had a lovely stay. The house is clean, comfortable and very spacious (3 stories) and is in a fabulous location. It is walking distance (less than 5 minutes!) from Peet’s Hill and very near to downtown dining and shops, yet it is very quiet, in a private-feeling tranquil setting. There is outdoor seating on an upstairs deck and in the garden. I highly recommend this house – 2 couples could stay here with ease and privacy, or there is plenty of space for a family. A great home base from which to enjoy Bozeman and surrounding areas.
